John Bean was born about 1837 in Stainton, Yorkshire, and he married Anne Elstob (or Elstop), on 11th October 1863 (Darlington, Durham). John was a railway Porter who was later 'promoted' to a Ticket Collector, (believed to be working on the Stockton-Darlington Railway). John and Anne had 8 children, including a daughter named Violet Maude Bean (b: 23rd July 1882 - Middlesbrough) and it was her husband that is the named 'Edgar Hoyle' on the monument. Sadly, Edgar was killed in 1915 by a sniper's bullet, whilst fighting in WW1.
