1847871760first name on monumentMary Sale; who died in Amiens; was the only daughter of William Michael Sale of Bledlow Ridge in Buckinghamshire; and Martha Pennington of Canterbury. She was the grand-daughter of George Sale; a distinguished English barrister and Orientalist who was the first person to translate the Koran into English; and his French Hugenot wife; Marianne d'Argent. Her uncle George Sale was a fellow of New Coll. Oxon; and her father and another uncle were talented writers. Mary Sale married in 1789 the Rev. Thomas Pennington (1762-1854); Rector (at the same time) of both Thorley in Hertfordshire; and of Kingsdown in Kent (of which he was patron). He was the nephew of the poet and letter-writer Mrs Elizabeth Carter who was an original member of the Blue-Stocking circle and a friend of Samuel Johnson; and who mentioned a Pennington nephew in her published correspondance with Mrs Montague. He had also been chaplain to the Countess of Bath (a friend of Mrs Carter); and a successful travel writer describing his tours of Europe. Her son was Thomas Sale Pennington; educated at Charterhouse and Trinity Coll.Oxon; who erected the tomb. A grand-daughter of Mary Sale and Thomas Pennington was the mother of the French WW1 general; Robert Nivelle.
