Boyd was born in Penninghame; Wigtown; Scotland and emigrated to New South Wales in Australia where he was a successful merchant. He inherited Merton Hall in Wigtownshire; and also had fashionable addresses in London and in Paris at 33; avenue des Champs-Elysées. He married his wife Margaret in the British Embassy in Florence in 1841.

1917 daughter of John Christian Curwen BoydEdith was the second daughter of John Boyd. She married Gustave Coquelin; the brother of the famous French actor Benoît Coquelin; who was rumoured to be the father of her nephew Henry Paget; the future Marquess of Anglesey. When her sister died; Edith raised the future Marquess; adding to the rumours surrounding his father. The 5th Marquess turned out to be one of the most flamboyant aristocrats of his period.

Margaret Roberta "Jane" Boyd nee Campbell
1890711819wife of John Christian Curwen BoydJane; as she was known; was born to a successful Scottish merchant family who emigrated to New South Wales from Greenock in Scotland. She was known for being socially ambitious; and appears in the diary of her neighbour and friend Marie Bashkirtseff who is also buried in this cemetery. Several of her children made distinguished marriages. One son married a great granddaughter of King William IV of England; and a daughter married the future 4th Marquess of Anglesey.

Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

I am writing an historical novel about the 5th Marquis of Anglesey and therefore researching his relatives. I understand he was brought up by Edith Marion Boyd from the age of 2 to 8 years of age when the 4th Marquis reclaimed him and took him to Plas Newydd.
