Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

Adam Paterson, who died and is buried in Upper Canada, and his son, James, were both at the Edinburgh Academy. The dates of attendance I have are 1824-27 and 1852-53 respectively. But these dates do not seem to fit with those given on this website, so I wanted to check the inscription.
