4BartlemanDavid Bartleman1757241781id: 302431762113692Master of the brig Alexandra and Margaret of North Shields who on 31st January on the Norfolk coast with only three 3 pounders and ten Men and Boys nobly defended himself against a cutter carrying eighteen 4 pounders and upwards of a Hundred Men commanded by the notorious English Pirate Fall and fairly beat him off. Two hours after the Enemy came down on him again. When totally disabled his Mate Daniel Mac Auley expiring with the loss of blood and himself having been dangerously wounded he was obliged to strike and ransome. He brought his shattered vessel into Yarmouth With more than the Honours of a Conqueror and died here in consequence of his wounds on the 14th of February following in the 25th year of his age ------------------------------------------------- Alexander Bartleman and Margaret Murry were married by Banns on 3 September 1751 at Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland. Their son Alexander was born and baptised on the 26 December 1754 at Christ Church, Tynemouth. David Bartleman, their second son was born and baptised on 11th February 1756 Christ Church, Tynemouth Daughter, Anne was baptised 24 February 1758 at Christ Church, North Shields. Daughter, Margaret(dob unknown), was buried 21 September 1760, Christ Church, Tynemouth. ----------------------------- Alexander Bartleman (Snr) of North Shields, Tailor was buried at Tynemouth on 11th February 1787. Margaret Bartleman nee Murry wife of the above died 29th December 1813 aged 87 yrs. _________________________ Christ Church, North Shields, Monumental Inscriptions recorded at the clearing of the churchyard, 1950 Sacred to the memory of Alexander Bartleman of North Shields who departed this life February 8th 1787 aged 65. years also four of his children. Margaret wife of the above died 29th December 1813 aged 87 years. David Bartleman their son died Yarmouth 14th February 1781. Alexander Bartleman son of Alexander and Margaret died March 12th 1856 aged 83 years. (No mention of the other two children) {Details from records held by Tyne & Wear Archives Service, Newcastle}

Alexander Bartleman Alexander Bartleman of Tynemouth and Humshaugh was Mayor of Tynemouth when he lived in Front Street, Tynemouth. He was at that time married to Sarah Colbeck niece of Christopher Colbeck of Warwick Grange, Northumberland.
